Dr. Annie Laurie McElroy Endows New Scholarship for Southern Regional Technical College Students

Thomasville, GA (10/09/2025) — Dr. Annie Laurie McElroy recently donated $25,000 to establish the new Dr. Annie Laurie McElroy Scholarship for Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) students at Southern Regional Technical College (SRTC). The endowment, held permanently, will maintain its principal value while generating distributable earnings. Once matured, this endowment will provide student scholarships every semester, ensuring sustained assistance for those in need.

Following her passion for education, Dr. Annie Laurie McElroy came to SRTC in 1992 as the Director of the Practical Nursing Program. As the Dean for Health Sciences, she initiated the processes for the college to offer the Associate of Science in Nursing degree program. As a proponent of technical education and a supporter of workforce development, her efforts focused on addressing the local and statewide shortage of nurses. The first class graduated in 2004, and every year thereafter. After 24 years at the college, Dr. McElroy retired in 2017 as the Vice President for Academic Affairs. Dr. McElroy is the recipient of the Georgia Baptist College of Nursing 2000 Distinguished Alumna Award and the College of Nursing Hall of Honor Inductee for Excellence in Nursing Education from Mercer University. She continues to serve our state and the nursing profession as the Chair of the Board of Visitors for the College of Nursing of Mercer University. Her motto is "Excellence is the standard".

"Dr. McElroy's dedication to nursing education has had an immeasurable impact on our college and our community," said SRTC President Jim Glass. "SRTC is the number one producer of nurses among all technical colleges in the state of Georgia, and that distinction is critical to meeting the healthcare needs of our community. This scholarship will help us continue to train the skilled nurses our region depends on and serve those who need quality healthcare."

The SRTC Foundation's first priority is to provide support that enhances student learning. SRTC's Executive Director of Institutional Advancement, Christina Reneau, said, "Dr. McElroy's generous gift exemplifies the same commitment to excellence that defined her remarkable career at SRTC. This endowment will create a lasting legacy, opening doors for aspiring nurses for generations to come. We are deeply grateful for her vision and generosity."
